The fantasy-action drama Kanguva, starring superstars Suriya in a dual role, has finally hit the theatres on November 14. Directed by Siva, the Tamil film also stars Bollywood actors Bobby Deol and Disha Patani, alongside Natarajan Subramaniam, K. S. Ravikumar, Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley, Kovai Sarala and Mansoor Ali Khan in pivotal roles.
Kanguva was announced in April 2019, however soon got shelved due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought the entire world to a standstill. After a long gap, the film’s pre-production started in August 2022 and the shoot was wrapped up in January 2024. Due to the delay, audiences’ anticipation had reached new heights, thereby raising expectations about the film.
Positives: Strong Performances And Visuals
People who watched the first-day-first show of the film gave mixed reviews about it. Suriya’s performance impressed the audience, who praised him for “delivering a convincing performance” on their social media handles. Bobby Deol did not disappoint either, but the makers failed to use his potential to the fullest.
Another aspect that caught the attention of the majority was the breathtaking visuals and beautiful cinematography. People appreciated the director for working hard to create a visually stunning experience that won’t let you take your eyes off the screen.
Negatives: Weak Script And Flawed Storyline
Despite powerful performances by Suriya and others, the film fails to keep the audiences hooked, shared netizens. Director Siva has also failed to hold the story together, as the screenplay looks very scattered, missing an emotional connect. Fans mentioned how the quality of the film does not justify its high budget, as it lacked “depth” and “substance”. Disha Patani was only used to raise the glamour quotient and did not contribute anything to the storyline, shared fans.
Music and background score was another disappointment for the fans, who shared that it failed to leave an impact. At points, it was just “loud noise” that annoyed them to the core.
Kanguva Film Reviews And Ratings Here:
“Despite avg VFX, #Kanguva is visually stunning. Good story, Weak Direction. Lacks depth throughout. #Suriya did a fantastic job, #BobbyDeol was underutilised, #DishaPatani was a major DISAPPOINTMENT. Music was good but too loud at times. Overall WATCHABLE,” wrote one.
Another shared a rather long-note, which read, “Kanguva is a below par fantasy action film that had a story with good potential but is executed in a clumsy way. Surya does well in his role and his efforts should be appreciated but it’s hard to save a script like this with just a performance.”
He gave a 2.25/5 to the film and wrote further, “The film has a few decent blocks here and there but the rest in between is very flat. The emotional connectivity needed for a film like this is completely missing. Director Siva holds the screenplay together partially in the first half but loses it in the second which makes it hard to sit through after a point. BGM works in few places but is too loud and not impactful in others. Production values are good.”
