Superstar Suriya’s comeback film Kanguva hit the screens on November 14 and has completed exactly 14 days since its theatrical release. Despite all the anticipation around it, the film disappointed fans and how. It failed miserably at the box office, hardly managing to touch that 100 crore mark. For the unversed, the film was reportedly made on a whopping budget of Rs 300-350 crore.
On day 14, which was its second Wednesday, Kanguva minted only Rs 30 Lakhs. It’s to be noted that no other big budget movie was released alongside to give a tough competition, besides re-releases like Karan Arjun and Kal Ho Na Ho. This has taken the overall collection to Rs 68.70 crore.
Kanguva’s Initial Collection
Kanguva opened on a decent note and collected Rs 24 crore on day 1. On day 2, it saw a massive fall and collected only Rs 9.5 crore. By the end of week 1, the collection was Rs 64.3 Crore, which is still decent, but the chaos happened after that. In the second week, film’s weak script and poor execution led to less to no footfall in several theatres. The collection on second Friday was only Rs 0.7 crore, followed by Rs 1.15 crore, Rs 1.35 crore on the following days.
Reason for failure?
While fans and critics have slammed the film for its weak script, producer G Dhananjeyan has blamed it on two fandoms in Kollywood and two political parties in Tamil Nadu. During an interaction with YouTube channel Aagayam Tamil, he clarified that the mentioned partied continuously targetted the actor with negative comments about Kanguva on social media.
“Back in 2014, I mentioned that two fandoms were targeting Suriya completely. There was a perception that these fandoms didn’t want Suriya to reach the next level. Whenever I tweet something related to Suriya or Kanguva, I see these two fandoms posting negative comments and trolls. Particularly, I see one fandom hating Suriya extremely. I don’t know why they troll Suriya to such an extent. Even if I post something philosophically, I see hate comments coming from people who keep that hero’s image as the profile picture. I don’t want to name them. To be frank, the positions of these two heroes are untouchable in the industry,” he shared.
He added, “Now, along with these two fandoms, two political parties have started spreading negativity about Kanguva. Once, Suriya made some comments about NEET and education policies. It seems his words didn’t sit well with the two political parties. Hence, they targeted the film and the actor.”
Kanguva also features Bobby Deol and Disha Patani in main roles. The film is directed by Siva.
