Janhvi Kapoor flags fake social media images, Varun Dhawan urges caution: ‘Technology always comes with responsibility’

Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan highlighted the urgent need to protect celebrity personality rights in the age of AI and deepfakes.

As AI and social media technologies advance, celebrities are facing more misuse of their images and identities. Recently, the Delhi High Court has been hearing cases from Bollywood stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Karan Johar. They claim their names, photos, and digital likenesses were used without permission. These cases have sparked discussions about making stronger laws to protect celebrities rights.

At the trailer launch of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari in Mumbai, the conversation went beyond cinema, with stars Janhvi Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Maniesh Paul, Rohit Saraf, director Shashank Khaitan, and Dharma Productions CEO Apoorva Mehta weighing in on the matter.

Janhvi Kapoor voiced her concerns about manipulated images circulating online. “I think security is extremely important. I don’t go into the legal or technical details, but I know that many fake images are on social media. Sometimes even media portals share them,” she said.

The actress went on to say that while celebrities may recognise the fakes, the public often doesn’t. “You and I might recognise that they’re fake, but ordinary people believe they are real,” Janhvi explained.

Varun Dhawan emphasised that technology is a double-edged sword. “This is very important. I believe technology always comes with responsibility. It can be helpful but also misused,” he said.

The actor added that without regulation, the future could see actors replaced by digital versions. “Right now we’re enjoying its benefits, but in the future there will be a need for laws and regulations,” Varun added. He warned that if regulation lags behind innovation, there may come a time when actors could be replaced entirely by digital versions.
