‘It Better Not Be A Girl, I Want My Grandson’: Suchitra Krishnamoorthi Recalls Pregnancy Trauma

Suchitra Krishnamoorthi recently opened up about the emotional turmoil she faced during pregnancy due to her father-in-law’s insistence on a male child. She called it her “first jhatka of patriarchy”.

Suchitra Krishnamoorthi has opened up about a personal and unsettling experience during her pregnancy, calling it her “first jhatka of patriarchy.” While living in London, where gender testing during pregnancy is legal, Suchitra discovered she was expecting a girl.

While speaking with with Filmymantra Media, Suchitra revealed that she was under constant pressure from her then father-in-law, who insisted she bear a male child “The first time I felt that jhatka of patriarchy and the difference was when I was pregnant. My then father-in-law used to call me daily and say, ‘I’m waiting for my grandson, I am waiting for my grandson.”

She explained how deeply the experience affected her “My then father-in-law still used to call me and say, ‘It better not be a girl, I want my grandson.’ I stopped talking to him”.

She further shared that her family was happy when they found out they were expecting a baby girl “We were all thrilled. My parents and family were happy, all were jumping, pooja kar rahe hain, mithai baat rahe hain,” she recalled.

Suchitra and Shekhar Kapur got married in 1997 and welcomed their daughter Kaveri in 2001, and separated eight years later. Earlier, Suchitra has opened up about how their divorce affected Kaveri.

Over the years, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi has played some memorable roles in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994), My Wife’s Murder (2005), Rann (2009), and Romeo Akbar Walter (2019).
