New Delhi: Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s rise from a struggling actor to a celebrated star is well-known. In the early days of his career, he played many minor and forgettable roles. The turning point came when Anurag Kashyap recognized Nawaz’s talent and offered him a significant role in the film Gangs of Wasseypur. However, their partnership started long before this gangster drama. At the Jaipur Literature Festival, Anurag shared an interesting story about meeting Nawaz through Rajpal Yadav. Rajpal was planning to leave Mumbai after struggling to find work, but Anurag stopped him and offered him a role in Shool. Nawaz, a close friend of Rajpal, accompanied him and also landed a small part in the film.
The Chance Meeting That Launched Two Careers: Anurag Kashyap And Nawazuddin Siddiqui
The filmmaker explained, “I met Nawaz in 1997. My friend Ashfaq ul Haq, who has acted in my films and appeared in Black Friday, called me one day. He said, ‘We have a very talented actor from NSD who is leaving Mumbai. If you can stop him, please try.’ I asked, ‘Where is he?’ and he told me, ‘He’s catching a train from Andheri station.’ We rushed there and found the actor, Rajpal Yadav. In 1997, Rajpal was very discouraged and about to leave Mumbai. I gave him a role in Shool as a coolie, which helped launch his career.”
“Rajpal had a friend with him, a thin and lean guy named Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Although Nawazuddin wasn’t leaving Mumbai, he was there as Rajpal’s friend. When I gave Rajpal a role, Nawazuddin also asked for one. There wasn’t a suitable role for him, but I offered him a small part as a waiter in Shool. Nawaz said, ‘I can do it.’ I warned him the role wasn’t significant, but he insisted, saying, ‘Sir, I’ll do it for 500 rupees.’ He was having money problems, and that’s how I met Nawaz,” Anurag Kashyap explained.
Public Reaction To The Iconic Launch Story
In response to the post, one user commented, “By helping two people, your choice resonated throughout the entire industry.” Another said, “You can see Rajpal Yadav’s impact when the audience starts laughing just at the mention of his name.” Another comment stated, “He saved and gave us great actors.”
Someone commented, “Wow, what an amazing performance by Rajpal Yadav in Shool. I never realized that was his first role in the industry.” Another added, “For 15 years, Nawaz kept dreaming and working to achieve that dream.” After Shool, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Anurag Kashyap collaborated on films like Black Friday, Haddi, Dev D, and Bombay Talkies, among others.
