Hansal Mehta, the director who collaborated with Manoj Bajpayee on the well-received drama ‘Aligarh,’ shared insights about their earlier collaboration on the relatively unnoticed 2000 comedy drama ‘Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!!’ According to Hansal, he found working with Manoj challenging during that project. In a recent interview, Hansal mentioned that when he brings up this experience with Manoj, the actor dismisses it, attributing his behavior to his youth at the time. Hansal added, “But I was young too; I didn’t comprehend what was going on either.”
During a year-end roundtable organized by Cinema Express, Hansal expressed his preference for collaborating with people he has a good rapport with. He emphasized that an actor doesn’t necessarily have to be overly expressive to leave an impression on him. For example, Rajkumar Rao was recommended to him by director Anurag Kashyap and casting director Mukesh Chhabra, and despite being introduced in this way, they have now collaborated on six projects. According to Hansal, the key is the connection he feels with the individuals he works with. He also mentioned that Manoj, with whom he worked on “Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!!” in 2000, had significant mood swings and was challenging during that particular film.
Hansal said, “But at heart, he’s a nice guy. He’s not a bad person. You get that vibe. When we were working together, I used to get very irritated. I would ask, ‘Manoj, why are you behaving like this?’ That was the time when Manoj would take the character and just go. I don’t know how he decided that the character should be irritable, but he thrust it on everyone. Everyone used to run away from him. Saurabh (Shukla) used to be like, ‘I went to speak to him and he was mean. What’s wrong with him?’”
Saurabh Shukla and Manoj had a notable collaboration in the groundbreaking crime drama ‘Satya,’ which significantly elevated Manoj’s fame. Following this success, Saurabh worked with Hansal on the highly acclaimed drama ‘Aligarh,’ a film that Hansal expressed particular fondness for. Meanwhile, Manoj is set to appear in the upcoming black comedy series ‘Killer Soup,’ and Hansal is preparing for the release of ‘The Buckingham Murders.’
