New Delhi: This June, HBO will begin streaming the new programme The Idol. It debuted on streaming services before being screened at the present Cannes Film Festival. The HBO drama also stars Lily-Rose Depp, Troye Sivan, The Weeknd, and Jennie of BLACKPINK, among others. The Idol has received harsh criticism in its initial reviews.
The Idol, according to the first assessment, has a regressive plot and plenty of explicit content. The show currently has an overall Rotten Tomatoes rating of just 9%, reflecting the overwhelmingly unfavourable reception it has received thus far. It is being hailed as the ‘worst-rated’ HBO programme ever.

In the movie The Idol, The Weeknd plays Tedros, a nightclub owner and cult leader who has a tangled bond with Lily-Rose Depp’s character, Jocelyn, a rising pop sensation. The first two episodes of the show were screened at Cannes, leaving the critics unimpressed. Others referred to it as “torture porn,” while others termed it “nasty.” Additionally, the show is critiqued for having a lot of sexual content.
The show’s HBO debut date is June 4, 2023. BLACKPINK’s Jennie Kim made her red carpet debut at Cannes wearing a white outfit with off-the-shoulder black sleeves. The K-pop icon is currently appearing in The Idol in a substantial extended role. Fans were pulling for her after their first few glances of her in the teaser.
Even though Jennie’s character isn’t fully developed, it’s assumed that she is essential to the HBO series. The idol-actress was also spotted having a blast dancing with the cast at the after-party in Cannes, France.
