In retaliation to actress Disha Patani’s sister Khushboo’s alleged remarks against a religious spiritual leader, the actress’ home in Bareilly was attacked by goons on Friday morning at around 3 am.
Gunshots were fired at Disha’s home where her parents live. Luckily, no one was hurt.
A discernibly shaken Disha Patani refrained from comment. But a source close to Disha spoke to me, saying, “She’s very scared, not only for herself, but more for her family. Her aging parents stay in Bareilly and have nothing to do with the glam-industry. Why target them? If someone has a problem with Disha or her sister, targeting their parents is a very cowardly way of getting even.”
Apparently, Disha intends to bring her parents to Mumbai until the situation normalizes. But the attack on Disha’s parents throws open the lid of a bigger problem: targeting celebrities in the guise of religious sensitivity.
A veteran actor-politician who chooses to go unnamed says, “I seriously think the strongest action must be taken against miscreants who cause violence in the name of religion. These lumpen elements cannot be seen as representing any rational Hindu ideology. No religion in the world gives anyone the right to perpetrate violence or to take the law into one’s own hands. I sincerely urge our dashing, dynamic Prime Minister, the ultimate action hero Shri Narendra Modiji, to take action against the rampant culture of violent protests, to look into the dirty doings of fascist elements who in the name of Hindutva take the law into their hands. If you don’t like a film or even the idea of a film, there are legal channels to express your protest and displeasure. Yeh danga-phasaad, maar-peet nahin chalega.”
