The race for the 2025 Oscars has officially begun, and while India’s official entry Laapataa Ladies failed to make the cut, there is a reason to celebrate. Guneet Monga short film Anuja has been shortlisted in the Best Live Action Short Film category, sparking joy among Indian cinema enthusiasts.
Directed by Adam J. Graves and Suchitra Mattai, Anuja sheds light on the pressing issue of child labor in the garment industry. Set in New Delhi, the film offers an authentic portrayal of this social challenge, aiming to raise global awareness. Its cast includes Nagesh Bhonsle, Sajda Pathan, and Ananya Shanbhag, who deliver heartfelt performances that resonate deeply with audiences.
Guneet Monga Expresses Gratitude
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Monga, the executive producer of the film, shared her excitement: “Having Anuja shortlisted for the Oscars is an incredible honor.” She further acknowledged the creative brilliance of the team and praised filmmakers Graves and Mattai for their refreshing screenplay. Monga added, “Remarkable performances by Sajda and Ananya ensure Anuja’s story continues to inspire audiences worldwide.”
This marks Guneet Monga’s third Oscar nomination. Her previous projects, The Elephant Whisperers and Period. End of Sentence., not only received nominations but also secured wins at the Academy Awards. With Anuja, Monga continues her streak of presenting impactful Indian stories on global platforms.

While Monga serves as the executive producer, Hollywood star and writer Mindy Kaling takes on the role of producer. This collaboration further amplifies the film’s international appeal and showcases the growing reach of Indian narratives.
The Live Action Short Film category features tough competitors, including Clodagh, The Compatriot, Crust, Dovecote, Edge of Space, The Ice Cream Man, I’m Not a Robot, The Last Ranger, A Lien, and The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent. Despite the stiff competition, Anuja stands as a strong contender, celebrated for its compelling narrative and stellar performances.
