Renowned Canadian First Nations actor Graham Greene, best known for his Oscar-nominated performance in the 1990 film Dances with Wolves, died on 1 September 2025 in Toronto after a long illness. He was 73 years old.
The news was confirmed by his agent Michael Greene (no family relation) and said, “He was a great man of morals, ethics and character and will be eternally missed.” “You are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven,” he added, referring to Greene’s longtime agent who passed away in 2013, as per Deadline.

Who Was Graham Greene?
Born on 22 June 1952 in Ohsweken, Ontario, Greene began his career on stage in the 1970s and later ventured into film and television. His big break came in 1990 with Dances with Wolves, in which he played Kicking Bird. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for this role. The film went on to win seven Oscars, including Best Picture, and Green became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable Indigenous actors.

Career
Over four decades, Green made notable contributions to film and television. His major works include Thunderheart (1992), Maverick (1994), Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), The Green Mile (1999), Wind River (2017) and Molly’s Game (2017). He also played important roles in TV series such as Northern Exposure, Longmire, American Gods, 1883 and Tulsa King. His last performance was in FX’s Reservation Dogs.
Green received a Grammy Award, Gemini Award, Canadian Screen Award and a place on Canada’s Walk of Fame for his contributions. In early 2025 he was also awarded the Governor General's Performing Arts Award, one of Canada's highest cultural achievements.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Hilarie Blackmore, their daughter Lily Lazare-Green, and grandson Tarlow.
