India’s Oscar hopes were dashed at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards as filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s critically acclaimed film, All We Imagine As Light, lost the Best Non-English Language Motion Picture award. Not just that, Payal also lost her chance to bring home Best Director Award.
The coveted film award was taken home by France’s Emilia Perez, a Spanish-language musical crime comedy written and directed by Jacques Audiard. Meanwhile, Brady Corbet won the Best Director award for his film The Brutalist, edging out Kapadia and other notable filmmakers.
Tough Competition
All We Imagine As Light was India’s top contender at the awards this year. However, it faced stiff competition from other nominees, including I’m Still Here (Brazil), The Girl With The Needle (Poland, Sweden, Denmark), The Seed of The Sacred Fig (Germany, France, Iran), and Vermiglio (Italy)
Payal was nominated for Best Director, alongside notable filmmakers like Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance), Edward Berger (Conclave), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez) and Sean Baker (Anora).
Reason To Celebrate
Though she lost the awards, Payal’s name will be recorded in history as she is the first Indian to be nominated in the best director award category at Golden Globes.
Moreover, All We Imagine As Light wrote another chapter in history by becoming the first film from India ever to win the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival in May last year.
