A Character Lost In Translation
Kevin S. Bright, one of the creators of Friends, once discussed why Joey did not work. He had shared, “although Joey Tribbiani was loved in Friends as a flirtatious guy and a good friend, his character in the spin-off completely changed. Rather than the self-assured, lovable doofus viewers loved, he was seen as a failed actor who couldn’t even ask a girl out. Under Bright’s version, this change erased Joey of his trademark charisma and made him come across as “pathetic,” ultimately not relating from him the audience that had grown to love him.”
