There has been a major backlash against the movie, Kesari Chapter 2, with people accusing the makers of misrepresenting the freedom fighters of Bengal. The ruling party in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC), has stated that the movie has insulted the great Bengali revolutionaries who died in the fight to give India freedom.
Seven producers of Kesari Chapter 2 have been booked through an FIR (First Information Report) filed at the Bidhannagar South police station. The case has even been logged in with various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
TMC said that the film has misrepresented popular Bengali freedom fighters. Khudiram Bose has reportedly been referred to as Khudiram Singh and Barindra Kumar Ghosh is said to be presented as Birendra Kumar of Amritsar. TMC leaders Kunal Ghosh and Arup Chakraborty lashed out at the film in a press conference held at the party’s headquarters.
According to PTI, Kunal Ghosh said, “The names of Bengali revolutionaries who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom were being distorted. This is not just a mistake — this is a conspiracy to erase Bengal’s role in the freedom movement. How did such a film get a censor certificate?”
They also called the film a “deliberate distortion of history” and said it was a “deep insult to Bengal.”
Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee also responded to the matter without referring to the film. She said, “There are attempts to undermine the role played by the Bengali revolutionaries during the independence struggle. We condemn this. The BJP has been targeting Bengal and our cultural heritage.”
Ghosh further added, “This is not the first time. The central government has often played games with Bengal’s legacy and dignity. But this time, the limit has been crossed.”
The movie has also been blamed for altering the identity of Hemchandra Kanungo who trained others on how to make bombs. Kunal Ghosh claimed that the filmmakers substituted his identity with a fictional character called Kripal Singh.
The TMC stated that they want the central government and the censor board to act. They said, “Why didn’t the censor board flag these historical distortions? Who allowed such a film to pass certification?”
