Farhan Akhtar was all praise after watching the trailer of The Smashing Machine, the new sports drama by Benny Safdie starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. He shared it on Instagram, calling the trailer very moving and applauding Johnson’s big transformation along with the efforts of Safdie and the cast.
The trailer came out on September 25 and has grabbed a lot of attention.
He captioned the post praising the film and its cast: “It’s not often that I feel the urge to share the trailer of someone’s film, but this one really moved me, so here I am. First, it’s directed by Benny Safdie @bowedtie, who made the brilliant ‘Uncut Gems’… second, there’s the amazing Emily Blunt, who is always a treat to watch … and then there’s Dwayne @therock Johnson in an unrecognisable avatar, really looking like he’s deep-dived into this one. Can’t wait to see it. The Smashing Machine (sic).”

The Smashing Machine is a 2025 American sports drama biopic directed, written, co-produced, and edited by Benny Safdie. Inspired by the 2002 documentary The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr, the movie features Dwayne Johnson as legendary MMA fighter and former wrestler Mark Kerr. Emily Blunt plays Kerr’s then-wife, Dawn Staples, while Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten, and Oleksandr Usyk appear in key supporting roles.
After its world premiere at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival, where Safdie clinched the Silver Lion for Best Director, the film went on to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival, earning glowing reviews. Critics hailed it as one of Johnson’s most compelling performances to date.
The Smashing Machine is set for a theatrical release on October 2, 2025.
