Deepika Padukone’s fans have expressed their anger on the internet after a comedian joked about the actress’ depression. Comedy show India’s Got Latent, which is on YouTube, is known for its dark humour. However, the joke about Deepika’s depression did not sit well with many people as mental health is a big taboo in India. Samay Raina, Tanmay Bhat, Raghu Ram, neurologist Dr Sid Warrier, and Balraj Singh Ghai were sitting in the panel.
The comedian said in the viral video, “Deepika Padukone also became a mother recently, right? Great, now she knows what depression really looks like.” She added, “I am not trying to insult breakup-wala depression,” and paused, then said, “I am.” The panelists, including Tanmay Bhatt, Samay Raina, and Raghu Ram, looked in disbelief as they burst into laughter.

Netizens were not happy with these comments. One Reddit user wrote, “Making fun of someone’s clinical depression is disgusting, but it’s even worse coming from a woman, all in the name of comedy.” Another person wrote, “I get that it’s suppose to be a “joke”. But we live in a country where mental health is still a huge taboo and a large section of people don’t take it seriously. These kinds of joke just make things worse and a step back for all those people working hard to bring awareness. Sorry but I don’t think we’re ready for such tasteless jokes.”
Another netizen commented, ‘This is exactly why mental health patients do not feel comfortable sharing their problems. It’s always trivialised and laughed about. And if that patient is a celebrity, tab toh ho gaya! People these days don’t consider celebrities as human beings entitled to a life & opinion of their own. Kuch bhi ho – troll the celebrity. Kuch na bhi ho – troll the celebrity. It’s now “cool” to insult people without knowing anything about them. This is not comedy.”
Meanwhile, on the work front, Deepika was last seen in the movie ‘Kalki 2898 AD’.
