Dhurandhar to face challenge from Avatar Fire and Ash challenge at Indian box office? Advance booking reports suggest…

Avatar: Fire and Ash has registered steady but underwhelming pre sales in India, falling well short of The Way of Water at the same stage.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is slowly gaining momentum in India, but early pre-sales suggest a quieter opening than what the franchise is known for. The film has sold close to 1 lakh tickets for its opening day at national multiplex chains so far, and this number is expected to be confirmed in the next update. Total weekend sales stand at around 2.25 lakh tickets.

Avatar: Fire and Ash advance booking report

While these figures are decent in the post-pandemic era, they are clearly lower than Avatar: The Way of Water. At the same point before release, Avatar 2 had already sold 2.3 lakh tickets for day one and went on to finish at 3.3 lakh tickets. Fire and Ash briefly showed signs of reaching the 2 lakh mark, but the pace has slowed since. It now looks more likely to end up with 1.5-1.65 lakh tickets for its first day, depending on last-minute bookings.

Some drop from Avatar 2 was expected, but the fall appears bigger than anticipated especially for a franchise that is among the most popular Hollywood brands in India, second only to the MCU. In fact, Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently behind The Conjuring 4 in first day ticket sales this year. Although its weekend performance should be stronger due to better spread, the opening day numbers were expected to be higher.

Will Dhurandhar continue to rule despite Avatar’s arrival?

Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar is clearly leading the box office and showing no signs of slowing down, even with new films arriving. As per Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 30.50 crore on its second Monday, which is more than what it made on its opening day. It stayed strong on Tuesday with another Rs 30.50 crore and added an estimated Rs 25.50 crore on second Wednesday, taking its total India collection to Rs 437 crore.

Other recent releases like Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 and Akhanda 2 have failed to compete with Dhurandhar’s steady performance. The key question now is whether Avatar: Fire and Ash can slow down this run or if Ranveer Singh’s blockbuster will continue to dominate the box office despite the Hollywood biggie’s arrival.

About Avatar: Fire and Ash

The film is written by James Cameron, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver, with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno also contributing to the plot. The film marks the third chapter in the Avatar saga, following Avatar (2009) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).

It stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, Matt Gerald, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Jemaine Clement, Britain Dalton, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo and Duane Evans in the lead roles.

Avatar Fire and Ash will release in theatres on December 19, 2025. The movie will have sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 as well.
