More than ten years after Raanjhanaa touched hearts with its emotional and tragic ending, the film is now facing criticism but for a different reason. Dhanush, who played the main role in the 2013 romantic film, has strongly opposed a new version of the movie that recently released in theatres with a changed ending.
In this new version, Dhanush’s character doesn’t die as he did in the original. Instead, he survives, giving the film a happy ending. This major change has triggered debates across the nation. Additionally, Dhanush has clearly stated that he doesn’t support the ‘new ending’.
In a statement issued late Sunday night, Dhanush said: “The re-release of Raanjhanaa with an Al-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul, and the concerned parties went ahead with it despite my clear objection. This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago.”
The actor also voiced concern about the broader implications of such alterations: “The use of Al to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists. It threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema. I sincerely hope that stricter regulations are put in place to prevent such practices in the future.”
“For the love of cinema,” he captioned his post.

Earlier, director Aanand L Rai had also criticised the move, saying it was “altered, repackaged, and re-released without my knowledge or consent.” He described the situation as “deeply upsetting” and said the altered version undermined the original intent and context of the film.
“A reckless takeover that strips the work of its intent, its context, and its soul” Rai remarked.
