New Delhi: Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has already seen witnessed controversy soon after being released in India and the subject was an objectionable scene where the titular character goes nude while reading a verse from the holy book ‘Gita.’
Following the backlash from Hindutava groups as well as from government representatives, including Union Minister Anurag Thakur and India’s Information Commissioner –, some amendments have been made.
The controversial scene in the film got a makeover that obviously stands out oddly. The makers have put a blur patch in the scene where Florence Pugh, the female lead, was bare back. Many of the abusive words have also been chucked out of the film after the protest.
However, the makers have retained the Gita verse to carry on the message that the scene wanted to send out at the first place.
Prior to this, it was argued that the particular verse is not from the holy book but a few Sanskrit text as the characters talk about many books in the scene but take name of ‘Gita.’
Oppenheimer was ‘influenced’ with Gita
The film has made blockbuster opening in the Indian cinemas anyway with the discussion over the movie refuses to die down in any room. The movie tells of J Robert Oppenheimer who is also known as ‘the father of the atom bomb.’ The physicist had read Gita and as known to his close ones, he was highly influenced by the same.
Oppenheimer, in an interview, had said the only verse that he recalled while witnessing the first detonation of a nuclear weapon on July 16, 1945, is the same that the character read in the film: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of world.”
As per media reports, the film makers had voluntarily removed the scenes before submitting it to the CBFC.
