Matthew Perry, renowned for his role as Chandler Bing in the beloved TV series “Friends,” has tragically passed away at the age of 54. The actor was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his Los Angeles residence by first responders, who were unable to revive him, according to law enforcement sources cited by the Los Angeles Times and TMZ. Both sources indicated that there were no signs of foul play.
Perry’s legacy is inextricably linked to his iconic portrayal of Chandler on “Friends,” a wildly popular series that aired for ten seasons from 1994 to 2004. However, behind his on-screen success, Perry faced a longstanding battle with addiction to painkillers and alcohol. He candidly shared his struggle in the memoir “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing,” which was published last year. In the book, he revealed that he had undergone detox a staggering 65 times and spent approximately $9 million on numerous attempts to achieve sobriety. The actor’s addiction had taken a toll on his health, leading to a burst colon in 2018 due to drug usage, which necessitated a seven-hour surgery and the use of a colostomy bag for several months.
While his assistant discovered him on Saturday, no drugs were reportedly found at the scene. Perry, born to Canadian and American parents in Massachusetts and raised in Canada, had also ventured into film, with credits including “Fools Rush In” and “The Whole Nine Yards.”
In addition to his impressive acting career, Perry and his “Friends” co-stars – Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer – made television history by securing $1 million per episode by the conclusion of the series. A reunion episode in 2021, attesting to the enduring appeal of “Friends,” saw each cast member earn $2.5 million.
During the reunion episode, Perry’s speech raised concerns among fans, and he surprised his colleagues by revealing he had battled severe anxiety during the show’s production. At the time of this writing, Perry’s representatives had not responded to requests for comment. The entertainment world mourns the loss of an actor who became a beloved figure for his portrayal of Chandler Bing and his enduring impact on popular culture.
