Much-awaited film Santosh’s release has been stopped by India’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) . Directed by British-Indian filmmakerSandhya Suri, this film explores serious societal issues but the CBFC has objected to its portrayal of police conduct, caste discrimination and police brutality.
As per the reports, the board has asked for major cuts making a theatrical release impossible without altering the heart of the story.
Sandhya Suri Reacts To CBFC’s Demands
Sandhya Suri expressed her disappointment over this decision. In a conversation with The Guardian she said, “It was very important to me that the film is released in India, so I did try to figure out if there was a way to make it work. But in the end, it was just too difficult to make those cuts and have a film that still made sense, let alone stayed true to its vision.”
However, Sandhya Suri had submitted her script to the CBFC before filming and had received approval without any concerns. So, this sudden turn from approval to rejection has raised question and disappointment in her mind.
Why Santosh Has Sparked Controversy
Santosh follows the story of a young widow in North India who joins the police force to investigate the murder of a Dalit girl. The film addresses difficult topics like misogyny, caste discrimination, sexual violence and Islamophobia.
Before this, the film was premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and was selected as the UK’s official entry for the Oscars in the international feature category.
The film also received a BAFTA nomination for Best Debut Feature, also the lead actress Shahana Goswami was recently named Best Actress at the Asian Film Awards.
Now, Indian fans are really looking forward for the film but now the question is will it be premiered in theatres or not.
