Robert Antony De Niro, an American actor and film producer, has been announced to be honored with the honorary Palme d’Or for lifetime achievement at the opening ceremony of the 78th Festival De Cannes, as per the Hollywood Reporter.
De Niro And Cannes
The influential director De Niro will be honoured on 13 May, 2025, which comes after 14 years of him serving as the president of the Cannes jury at the festival in 2011. He has been connected with Cannes for many years.
In 1976, he was the part of two films which were shown in the Cannes Film Festival: 1900 by Bernard Bertolucci and Taxi Driver by Martin Scoreses. Both of these films won the top prize, the Palme d’Or. Then, in 1983, he again came to Cannes with another Scoreses film named The King of Comedy. Three years later, he returned to the festival with The Mission, directed by Ronald Joffe, which became the second Palm d’Or winner for whom he was part of.
Recently, in 2023, he caught the eyes of his fans at Cannes for Killer of the Flower Moon by Scoreses.

De Niro’s Views
Robert De Niro reveals his close connection with the Cannes by stating, “I have such close feelings for Festival de Cannes.” He also added, “Especially now when there’s so much in the world pulling us apart, Cannes brings us together — storytellers, filmmakers, fans, and friends. It’s like coming home”, according to the report.

Apart from receiving the great honorary Palme d’Or in the opening ceremony, it is also speculated that Niro will also be participating in a masterclass organized for the festival attendees on 14 May, 2025 at Debussy Theatre, as per Hollywood reporter. The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will be scheduled from 13 May to 24 May, 2025.
