Bhool Chuk Maaf has landed in legal trouble after PVRInox reportedly sent a legal notice to the makers for their decision to release the film directly on OTT. According to report by Bollywood Hungama, the Bombay High Court granted ad-interim relief to PVR Inox Limited and decided to restrain the release of Rajkummar Rao-starrer.
For the unversed, production house Maddock Films took the decision of releasing Bhool Chuk Maaf directly on OTT in the light of recent situation and the heightened security drills across the country. The movie was supposed to release in theatres on May 9. As per Bollywood Hungama, PVR Inox argued that the decision of film’s direct OTT release was a clear breach of their binding agreement signed on May 6, 2025. The agreement reportedly mandated not only a theatrical release but also an 8-week exclusivity window before any digital premiere.
However, the makers said that the clause requiring an 8-week theatrical holdback only applied if the film was released in cinemas. They further added that they have the right to choose the release platform as copyright holders.
Earlier, Pinkvilla reported that PVRInox has sent a legal notice to Maddock Films and Pen Marudhar after the makers opted for direct OTT release.
An insider told the publication, “They are not liable to answer anyone. Cinema halls in Jodhpur, and Punjab are shut, whereas the cinema halls in cities like Delhi are non-operational in the night shows. With the cancellation of IPL, it was a no-brainer for the producers to delay the release of Bhool Chuk Maaf. Since the KDM’s were already loaded all across the globe, there was a possibility of piracy too, which pushed the makers to go for a direct-to-digital release without much of a delay.”
“What if Maddock held back on the release for a month, but a lapse in security leads to the leak of content? Eventually, the investment in Bhool Chuk Maaf is made by Maddock, and PVRInox have no stake to be a part of decision-making process,” insider reportedly added.

Meanwhile, a source from PVRInox was quoted as saying, “It is highly unfortunate that a project promoted on this scale was pulled without any formal communication. As India’s leading theatrical platform, we invest heavily in campaigns in good faith and expect our content partners to uphold basic standards of professionalism. The film has taken a direct to digital release due to poor advance.”
Bhool Chuk Maaf stars Rajkummar Rao, Wamiqa Gabbi in the lead roles with Sanjay Mishra, Seema Bhargava Pahwa, Zakir Hussain Raghubir Yadav, Ishtiyak Khan, Anubha Fateh Puria, Jay Thakkar and Pragati Mishra seen in the pivotal roles.
