Baida Review: Sudhanshu Rai, who is a well-known storyteller, has made his big screen debut with the sci-fi supernatural thriller ‘Baida’. The movie focuses on a former assassin, who gets stuck in a world that is beyond the dimensions of this realm. Despite being made on a small budget, Baida is an ambitious project and explores a new genre. Check my verdict of Baida to know if you should give it a watch in theatres or not.

Baida Review:

Baida started on a strong note and immediately captured my attention with Hiten Tejwani’s intense performance. Then, we are teleported to the present time with the introduction of Sudhanshu Rai’s character Ram, who is a hitman/assassin tormented by the murder he commits. He decides to give his life a new start and finds himself in the middle of a village Sirhar. He is soon teleported into a strange world and puts his life in danger. The rest of the story is basically Ram trying to save his life and going on a quest to find the secret behind this strange and mysterious world.

Starting this review with positive aspects, Baida has an intriguing storyline, and many interesting things are explored in this plot. The performances of Hiten Tejwani and Shobhit Sujay are the highlight of the film despite being on screen for a short period of time. Sujay’s back-and-forth banter with Sudhanshu Rai creates some funny moments in the film and brings some lightheartedness to this intense subject. It is quite clear that Baida is made on a fraction of many Bollywood films but the ambitions of the makers are big.

Moving on to the negative aspects, Baida’s biggest problem is its editing, which sometimes catches you off guard and unintentionally makes the scenes funny. From the red lighting to split screens, some of the editing choices were not necessary. Meanwhile, Sudhanshu Rai’s performance in some scenes is not as impactful as it should be. He has the same intense expression in displaying almost every emotion, whether the situation is supposed to be scary or confusing. However, he shines in an emotional scene and definitely has it in him to showcase his acting prowess. Sourabh Raaj Jain is also a great addition to the film and effortlessly plays a villain. But his performance sometimes suffers a setback due to his vaguely written character. Tarun Khanna’s character comes out of nowhere and his character is also ambiguous.

Baida could have been an entertaining watch but its lackluster writing needed more work. The climax is usually a highlight of every film but here, it ends abruptly. Baida is something that sounds promising on paper but is difficult to execute.

Puneet Sharma’s directorial can be your decent one-time watch film with its promising cast and interesting story. But it definitely needed more work and a finishing touch in its editing and writing.
