Everyone knows Gulzar Saab’s excellence as an author, poet and filmmaker.
But Gulzar, the actor??!!!
Over to the Maestro. “I went to London and played a part in Jallianwala Bagh. That was entirely by default. Actually I had gone for scripting. But finally every member of the unit had to play a role. I purposely chose a character who had to wear an overcoat. It was so cold, you see. This time I had gone for a book release. A really weight book called Bollywood. It weighs at least 2 kilos (chuckles). Both Shyam Benegal and I were invited. Then there was a poetry session at the Nehru Centre. It was a very nice change. Winter hadn’t set in London, so this time I didn’t need an overcoat. My kurta and shawl were enough. Om Puri was shooting in London while I was there. He came over to meet me just to see what I wear when I’m abroad. He was very disappointed to see me in my trademark kurta-pyjama. Shawl kaafi hai, to keep me warm. Shyam Benegal wonders how Mrinal Sen and I managed with a shawl even in the below-zero temperature of Moscow. If Gandhiji could manage with just a langoti why can’t I manage with a shawl?”
