Was it difficult to shoot all the Kapoors together?
We had a massive eight-camera set-up, a crew of five hundred people. You know, we had big production days, small production days. You know, honestly, for me as a new producer, a new showrunner, it’s the first time I’m, you know, creatively guiding this entire film. It was a massive learning and experience for me. There were challenges, of course.
Like what?
I mean, at all stages you know whether it was during pre-production, production and editing because you have so much content. Especially putting this film and doing justice in sixty minutes always gets very, very difficult and especially losing certain moments you’ve shot is something that is very difficult to kind of let go. But I think we’ve captured the best sixty minutes of the film, and yes, we countered problems as we went along. It’s been a great learning experience as new producers. I have two wonderful partners, Varun Ambani and Naval Gamadia, the company is called Avashek Media. You know we always believed that this should be our first project. Although we had a couple of films lined up a few years ago, we wanted to do this as our first because we connected most of this project, and God willing, you know we do a couple of more which are lined up right now. So yeah, it’s been a tremendous experience.
Food seems to be the binding factor?
Food was just a catalyst, and I think it’s a catalyst in most families to bring people over to the dining table to kind of discuss things, have conversations, and bond with each other. So I thought that would be the, I mean, that’s been a catalyst in our family to really bring families together at all occasions, whether they are small occasions, big occasions, and that’s pretty much, you know, a device or a tool we kind of use to kind of build out this narrative.
You shot the film at Raj Saab’s bungalow?
The bungalow which is a huge part of Raj Kapoor and Krishna Kapoor’s legacy and journey where you know food was obviously one aspect but the idea was to kind of you know bring people together and you know the Kapoor family at large is a family that love you know are together as an army in good times and bad times for each other and I think all families do that for each other you know so especially in the bad times when things aren’t going your way and that’s those are things that you know we’ve inherited and learned from whether it was Raj Kapoor or Krishna Kapoor and I want to bring out those values on camera and I wanted to show the most real side to this family.
Was it tough shooting the Kapoors all together?
We shot in a really a fly on the wall style, I mean, at times I had family members come to me and be like are you sure the cameras are rolling? Are they rolling? Not rolling? And it was you as real as everyone could be. I really wanted to bring out that emotion at the bungalow, which was super important to all of us family members. It was a house full of memories for us, the bungalow, the owner where you know whether it was you know from script meetings, narrations, ideation to literally you know family getting together and having a good time so as it’s not with us anymore I really wanted to shoot there one last time and capture its you know essence and we recreated that at the finale of the film.
