Music maestro and Oscar winning artiste AR Rahman’s wife, Saira Banu has announced separation after 29 years of marriage. The two took their wedding vows in 1995. Rahman and Saira are parents to three children- Khatija, Raheema and Ameen.
According to Saira’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, the decision was made due to substantial emotional distress in their relationship.
The statement read, “After many years of marriage, Mrs Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband Mr AR Rahman. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time.”
It further stated, “Mrs Saira emphasised that she has taken this decision out of pain and agony. Mrs Saira requests privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time, as she navigates this difficult chapter in her life.”
About Rahman and Banu’s relationship
Rahman and Banu did not know each other before marriage. In an interview with Simi Garewal, Rahman had revealed that it was an arranged set up and his mother had fixed his marriage to her. He also confessed that he did not have the time to go and find a bride for himself, thus choosing an arranged marriage was the only option.
“To be honest, I didn’t have time to go and search for a bride. I was doing all these films and Rangeela in Bombay so I was so busy in that. But, I knew it was the right time for me to get married. I was 29 and I told my mother. I said, ‘find me a bride’,” he shared.
Rahman had just one demand and he conveyed it to his mother. He asked her to find him a “simple woman who won’t give me much trouble so I could carry on doing my music and hope she inspires me.”
