David Lynch, the maverick director known for his surreal masterpieces like Mulholland Drive and the groundbreaking TV series Twin Peaks, has passed away at 78. Lynch, who had been battling emphysema following years of heavy smoking, left behind a legacy that redefined cinema and television. His family released an emotional statement, saying, “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.'”

Just last year, Lynch spoke candidly about his deteriorating health due to emphysema. In August, he revealed the severe breathing issues he was facing, describing it as akin to having “a plastic bag around your head.” By November, he admitted to struggling with daily activities, saying, “I can hardly walk across a room.”

News of Lynch’s passing has left Hollywood in mourning. Director Ron Howard expressed, “#RIPDavidLynch, a gracious man and fearless artist who proved that radical experimentation could yield unforgettable cinema.” Comedian Patton Oswalt paid a surreal homage in Lynch’s signature style, saying, “At least that’s what the horse wearing a fez just told me in a dream.
