The case against Alec Baldwin in the tragic shooting incident on the set of Rust has been officially closed. Nearly six months after a judge dismissed the involuntary manslaughter charges, the Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office confirmed the case’s conclusion.
On Monday, Special prosecutor Kari Morrissey announced the withdrawal of the state’s appeal, which had been filed in November. The appeal sought to overturn the judge’s decision to drop the charges against Baldwin, related to the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Baldwin’s Legal Team Responds
In response, Baldwin’s attorneys, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, issued a joint statement, celebrating the decision as a “final vindication.” They emphasized Baldwin’s innocence, stating, “This was an unspeakable tragedy, but Alec Baldwin committed no crime.” The lawyers also praised the ruling, noting that “the rule of law remains intact in New Mexico.”

The charges against Baldwin were dismissed with prejudice on July 12 after a court hearing. The decision followed a review of evidence, which Baldwin’s defense claimed had been withheld by police and prosecutors. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer ruled that the discovery of this evidence had compromised the fairness of the proceedings, stating that the case had to be dismissed as a result.
Prosecutor Criticized for Misconduct
In the weeks following the dismissal, Judge Sommer criticized the prosecution for misconduct, accusing them of intentionally withholding key evidence. She also pointed out the inconsistencies in prosecutor Kari Morrissey’s testimony and stated that Morrissey had failed to meet legal obligations in handling the case.
