In the advertisement in question, a father can be seen crying at the bride’s farewell. Akshay Kumar features as a cop and makes fun of the father for putting the newlyweds in a vehicle with only two airbags. Many claimed that the advertisement supported the dowry custom. Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi referred to it as “problematic” and questioned “who passed such an ad that is promoting evil & criminal acts of dowry.” It is “disgusting to see the government officially promoting dowry,” TMC leader Saket Gokhale said. Many users, not just leaders, condemned the alleged promotion of dowry. Keep reading to learn more.

Watch the ad below:

Just a few days earlier, the most recent National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, which was published on August 29, indicated that 6,753 women would pass away in 2021 as a result of dowry-related harassment. The same set of data for 2020 showed that dowry harassment claimed the lives of 19 Indian women every single day.

National spokesperson of Trinamool Congress Saket Gokhale also took a dig at Gadkari and expressed that it was “disgusting to see the Indian government officially promoting dowry.”
“This ad is the pits. Lost the plot completely. Is this about the wedding, the bride or that dowry should be 6 airbag car-what is it? These govt ads are so puerile and ill-conceived. They couldn’t talk about safety any other way?” a third user tweeted.

As for Akshay, this is not the first time the actor has come under scrutiny for promoting an ad. The actor had earlier attracted flak for featuring alongside Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan in a pan masala ad.
