The proposed biopic on the Father of Indian Cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke, has been called off. The project was announced with much fanfare, with Aamir Khan playing Phalke, while Rajkumar Hirani, who had earlier directed Aamir in two blockbusters, 3 Idiots and PK, was to helm the project.
However, after months of deliberation, the project has been cancelled.
Some probing revealed the villain to be the script.
“Aamir felt Hirani’s script for the Phalke biopic was just not interesting enough to attract today’s audience. It lacked mass appeal. Aamir sent Hirani to the script board twice. But the end result didn’t speak to Aamir. He suggested to Hirani that they put the film on hold and work on something else.”
Speaking on his current work status, Aamir says, “Well, actually, Subhash, I’m doing much more work as a producer because I’ve got four films lined up. Yes, you have Lahore 1945. There’s a film I’ve produced with Veer Das in it. Veer has also directed the film. I have a very small cameo in that, yeah. Then there is a romantic love story that I’ve produced called Ek Din with my son Junaid and Sai Pallavi in it. The fourth one is a comedy. It is in the Basu Chatterjee or Hrishikesh Mukherjee genre of film, which I feel that we have forgotten making. You know, we don’t make that kind of cinema anymore. Sweet, innocent comedy.”
Meanwhile, Aamir is going through more than 20 new scripts as he prepares to announce his next project in early 2026. Hirani is also looking at new ideas and hopes to work with Aamir again when the right story comes up.
