When Raj Kapoor was justifying the bold scenes in Ram Teri Ganga Maili, another Bollywood actress stirred controversy by going against her husband and filming a romantic scene. Her on-screen kiss with Rishi Kapoor in Saagar created a sensation but also paved the way for her grand comeback in Bollywood.
At just 25, Dimple Kapadia returned to Bollywood with Ramesh Sippy’s Saagar. The film featured her in a swimsuit by the sea- a bold choice for the time. Despite the controversy, Dimple once stated in an interview, “Even a mother of two can make a comeback.”
Kiss Scene With Rishi Kapoor Created A Storm
After Saagar’s release, Dimple’s kiss scene with Rishi Kapoor made headlines. Reports suggest that Rishi never informed his wife, Neetu Kapoor, about the scene until she saw it at the film’s premiere. Addressing the controversy, Dimple told Rediff, “I don’t want to talk about the swimsuit. The film was good.”
During Bobby, rumours hinted at more than just friendship between Rishi and Dimple. It is said that when Rajesh Khanna proposed to her, she removed a ring allegedly gifted by Rishi Kapoor and threw it away.

Saagar: A Film Worthy Of Praise
Unlike most films of the 80s, Saagar stood out with R.D. Burman’s exceptional music. Ramesh Sippy invested heavily in the film, which had a budget of Rs. 3.2 crore. Post-Sholay, he struggled with hits, but Saagar proved to be a significant film.
Post-Bobby, Dimple received many film offers, but Rajesh Khanna wanted her to quit acting and focus on family. She obliged but soon felt suffocated in the relationship, which she described as unequal.
A Rocky Relationship With Rajesh Khanna
Dimple, 16 years younger than Rajesh, was financially dependent on him. Over time, she found her married life unbearable. She reportedly attempted to leave with her daughters three times but failed.
In 1982, Dimple finally separated from Rajesh Khanna. She realized she needed to return to films, not just for herself but for her two daughters. As a single mother, she was determined to build an independent life.
Dimple married Rajesh Khanna at 16, believing in a fairytale love story. However, reality was different. In a 1985 India Today interview, she revealed, “The moment I entered Rajesh’s house, Aashirwad, I knew this marriage wouldn’t last.”
