The cultures of India and Nepal have been connected to each other for several years. As Nepal has been currently facing turmoil due to the protests, many Indian citizens have extended their support towards them. This deep-rooted connection is also reflected in the lives and careers of several Indian celebrities who have Nepali roots. 1. Manisha Koirala
Born in Biratnagar, Nepal, Manisha Koirala belongs to a prominent political family. She is the granddaughter of Nepal’s former Prime Minister Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala. Her father is Prakash Koirala, who was a former Cabinet minister who held the portfolios of Environment, Science and Technology of Nepal.
While talking about Nepal’s protest, Manisha wrote on Instagram, “Today is a black day for Nepal — when bullets respond to the voice of the people, outrage against corruption and demand for justice.”
2. Rohit Saraf
Born in Kathmandu, Nepal, to a Marwadi family, Rohit Saraf moved to Delhi with his family and was raised there. He later shifted to Mumbai at the age of 15 to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. Despite being away from Nepal, Rohit voiced his support towards the citizens and mourned the loss of lives due to the violent protests. He wrote, “To everyone in Nepal… my thoughts and prayers are with you. No struggle should come at the cost of innocent lives. Violence is never the answer. Hoping for dialogue, compassion, and peace.”
3. Bharti Singh
Comedian-actor Bharti Singh has Nepali roots on her father’s side. According to reports, her father was half Indian and half Nepali. She has openly talked about her connection to Nepal and also expressed her love for Nepali cuisine.
4. Danny Denzongpa
Danny Denzongpa was born in Sikkim to a Nepali-speaking Bhutia family. He is a celebrated actor with a career spanning over five decades. As per reports, the actor has worked in over 190 films. He was also awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour.
5. Udit Narayan
Singer Udit Narayan’s father was reportedly a Nepalese national. He was born in the Baisi village of Supaul district in Bihar at his maternal grandparents’ home near the India-Nepal border.
6. Mala Sinha
Veteran actress Mala’s parents are Christian Nepali, who immigrated to West Bengal. She also acted in a Nepali film called ‘Maitighar’ in 1966. She also married Nepali actor Chidambar Prasad Lohani in the same year.
7. Sunil Thapa
Sunil Thapa is a popular Nepali actor who has worked in several Indian movies. In Bollywood, he appeared in Ek Duuje Ke Liye, Aaj Ki Awaaz, Manav Hatya, Bandhu, and many more. He also worked in several Bhojpuri films.
