Ranveer Allahbadia, also known as BeerBiceps, has recently faced controversy due to an inappropriate comment he made on comedian Samay Raina’s show, ‘India’s Got Latent.’ Many comedians in India, like Ranveer, have dealt with legal issues when their jokes were seen as ‘offensive’ or ‘obscene.’
Check out these five comedians who have found themselves in trouble because of their comments and jokes.
1. Vir Das
Vir Das’s stand-up special, ‘I Come From Two Indias,’ caused controversy because many believe he criticized India’s politics and how the country ensures women’s safety. He made a controversial statement that reads, “In India, we worship women during the day and rape them at night.” This led to two police complaints against him in Delhi and Mumbai. In both cities, politicians and activists asked for police investigations, claiming that the comedian defamed the nation.
2. Munawar Faruqui
Munawar Faruqui, a comedian known for his sharp humour, was arrested in Indore before a scheduled show. He was accused of hurting religious feelings with comments he made in his earlier performances. His statement reads, “Mera piya ghar aaya o ram ji, ram ji don’t give a f*** about your piya”. The joke didn’t sit well with the Hindu audience leaving him in big trouble.
3. Tanmay Bhatt
Comedian Tanmay Bhat faced backlash in 2016 for a mock conversation with Lata Mangeshkar and Sachin Tendulkar, which the Shiv Sena and the BJP found disrespectful. This led to calls for action against him and other AIB members.
Bhat often joked about the government and mainstream media, with one AIB roast getting over 50 million views on unofficial uploads.
After AIB’s downfall, Bhat was removed from ‘Comicstaan.’ He dealt with clinical depression and chose to leave comedy. However, he later began streaming, gaming, and reviewing cringe TikToks, gaining over 2 million subscribers in just a few months.
4. Abish Mathew
Abish Mathew was part of the AIB Roast, where he made controversial comments about the Christian community. This led to strong opposition, and he eventually had to visit a church to apologize. After AIB ended, Abish started his own chat show. Now, he prefers creating content for streaming platforms instead of social media.
5. Vidushi Swaroop
Stand-up comedian Vidushi Swaroop made a controversial statement about prostitution in one of her shows. As a result, she faced a lot of trolling and criticism, with many calling her jokes obscene. This backlash seriously impacted her career. Although Vidushi has not completely left comedy, she now performs fewer shows than she did before.
