Over three decades after Khalnayak became a cult sensation, director Subhash Ghai has confirmed that a sequel is officially in development. He shared that Sanjay Dutt will come back as Ballu, the criminal character he played in the original movie. But this time, the story will focus on a new, younger character who will go up against Ballu.
Filmfare quoted an insider, “Subhash ji is excited about staging a sequel to Khal Nayak. The story will be based on new characters played by newcomers. But add the original appeal, with Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt might be roped in for special roles. It’s a project in the making right now, but Subhash ji and his team are very excited about this project.”
While speaking with with Etimes, Ghai clarifyied that the film will not reboot Ballu’s character but instead introduce a new younger character, “The truth is I am not looking for actors to play Ballu Balram but a younger actor to play a new character in Khalnayak 2 who will be pitted against Ballu Balram who is 55 years old man now. Ballu will be played Sanjay Dutt only. Like Al Pacino played in Godfather 2 and Marlon Brando played Godfather 1″ Ghai said while comparing the structure to The Godfather series where Al Pacino and Marlon Brando carried different eras of the story.

According to IndiaToday.in, Ghai is considering top names like Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor, Allu Arjun, and Yash for this new role, “Subhash Ghai wants to approach actors like Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor for the character of Ballu Balram. In fact, he isn’t sticking to just Bollywood. Allu Arjun and Yash are also in his list and he wants to approach them as well. He just wants someone who would be able to take the legacy of Ballu Balaram forward.”
Khal Nayak is a 1994 action crime film written, directed, and produced by Subhash Ghai under his production company Mukta Arts Ltd. It stars Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, and Jackie Shroff. The film follows the attempt to recapture escaped criminal Ballu by sub inspector Ram and his girlfriend Ganga.
