We had never seen anything like Kaal before, that’s for sure. The last half-hour of the smouldering plot was sheer heart-in-the-mouth stuff. Generating heat and horror through expressions of disdainful cynicism that melt into a reluctant belief in the supernatural, the film left us with the most positive mixed-feelings created by a film in recent times. The performances, though not outstanding, seemed to fall into place in the larger scream of things.
Speaking of the experience, Esha Deol says, “Kaal was a wonderful experience. Right from working with the ultimate Karan Johar Dharma production, to dancing to the steps by one of my most favourite dance choreographers, Farah Khan. The tigers were gorgeous and my co-star John Abraham was an absolute pleasure to work with.”
Esha bonded with the team in the jungles. “We were one big family and actually lived for 2½ months together in the jungle, Jim Corbett. We used to wake up at 3 a.m., do our hair, makeup and then drive into the jungle. Shoot from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and then had our evenings free where, you won’t believe, we all played hide n seek together, AJ (Ajay Devgan) included. It was one of my most memorable film shoots ever. Soham Shah, my director, was really sweet and we are still good friends.”
