The ongoing term of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly will come to an end on May 30, 2021. There are 294 assembly seats in the state. The elections will be held in 8 phases starting from March 27. There will be 1,01,916 polling booths in West Bengal. The election dates are March 27, April 1, April 6, April 10, April 17, April 22, April 26 and April 29. The election results will be declared on May 2. Mamta Banerjee has been holding to post of West Bengal chief minister for the last 10 years.

Mamata Banerjee

She was born on January 5, 1955 in Kolkata, West Bengal to a lower-middle class family. Mamata Banerjee entered national politics in 1984, after defeating an experienced opponent like Somnath Chatterjee. In 1991, during the tenure of then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, Mamata Banerjee was appointed Minister of State for the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Sports and Youth Affairs, Women and Child Development. Special: She became the first woman chief minister of West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee founded the Trinamool Congress in 1997 after differences with the Congress party. The Assembly elections were held in Bengal in 2011 when she was the Railway Minister. At that time, her party did well and she became the Chief Minister.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharya

He was born on March 1, 1946. He was CM from the year 2000 to 2011. He joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1966. In 1996, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya was made the home minister of the state. This was the period in West Bengal when Buddhadeb Bhattacharya's political stars were on the rise. Special: In the year 2006, his party CPI (M) was in the majority. Siddharth Shankar Rai

His father's name was Sudhir Kumar Rai and mother's name was Aparna Devi. `Siddharth Shankar Rai's political life began with the help of Congress leader Ashok Kumar Sen. He was also the Governor of Punjab from 1986-89. Special: He was a constitution expert. Indira Gandhi called Siddharth Shankar Rai just before the Emergency. Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee

The Governor removed him as CM. After this, there was a lot of violence in the whole of Bengal. He became the CM again, but the Home Department was with the CPM. Law and order broke down in Bengal and Bengal came into the international limelight.

Prafulla Chandra Ghosh

He was born on December 24, 1891 in Malikanda village in Dhaka district (capital of Bangladesh). His father's name was Purna Chandra Ghosh and mother's name was Binodini Devi. After independence, Prafulla Chandra Ghosh became the first Chief Minister of West Bengal. He died in the year 1983. Special: He left the Congress Party in 1948 after a no-confidence motion. He became the Chief Minister, but had to step down immediately. He then formed his own party and again became the Chief Minister after much struggle with the support of Congress after 1967.

Prafulla Chandra Sen

Prafulla Chandra Sen was born on April 10, 1897 in Arambagh in Hooghly district. He was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi. He supported Mahatma Gandhi in the non-cooperation movement against the British. He was called 'Gandhi of Arambagh' because of his contribution to village development work and Harijan revival. Prafulla Chandra Sen also spent 11 years in jail during the freedom movement. Special: In order to enable mothers and children to get enough milk, he had banned Rasgulla in Bengal. This caused him to lose political power.

Bidhan Chandra Roy

He was born on 1 July 1882. He was a doctor by profession and a freedom fighter. He was born in a migrant Bengali family in Bankipur, Bihar. His father Prakash Chandra Roy was a deputy magistrate. Mata Adhorakamini volunteered to take celibacy fast at the age of 35. At that time, besides being prominent among doctors all over the world, he also remained at the peak in politics. He died on July 1, 1962 due to a heart attack. Special: He was the Chief Minister for 14 consecutive years. He was to be made the Governor of Uttar Pradesh after independence, but he refused.
