The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has issued an order allowing menstrual leave to female students which will benefit over 4,000 students studying in the university, including the ones of PhD.

As per the new rule, female students can avail the menstrual benefits in the form of additional condonation of shortage of attendance. All female students will get an additional leave benefit of 2 per cent each semester.

Meanwhile, in a current rule, those under 75 per cent attendance cannot appear for the exams. They are required to submit an application to the Vice-Chancellor attached with medical certificate.

However, those who will avail the menstrual leave will not have to submit any medical certificate. They can simply submit an application.

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) led the demonstration seeking the leave. Earlier in Kerala, the Mahatma Gandhi University legitimated 60 days maternity leave to its degree and post graduate students last month.
