The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced Ishan Uday Special Scholarship Scheme 2025, which intends to advance higher education among students enrolled in the universities of the North Eastern Region (NER) of India.
The scheme is a flagship initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, that aims to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in NER, by providing financial aid to students from emerging Economically Weaker Sections.
The scheme started in 2014-15 and has been awarding 10,000 fresh scholarships every academic year to eligible students in the general, professional, technical, medical and paramedical degree courses, in the recognized institutions in India. The applications for the academic year are currently active in the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the Ishan Uday Scholarship 2025, applicants have to:
1. Be a domicile of any of the eight northeastern states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, or Tripura.
2. Have passed (XII) Class or equivalent in the last academic year from application date.
3. Have been enrolled in the first year for a general or professional degree course of full-time student in a recognized institute.
4. Be a member of the family with an annual income of Rs 4.5 lakh or below.
5. Transgender applicants are eligible too. Reservations will follow Government of India norms.
However, students enrolled in open universities, management quota admissions, non-degree diploma courses, or already have a scholarship award are not eligible for this scheme.
Scholarship Amount
Chosen students will be awarded scholarships as follows:
Rs 5,400 per month – for students in degree courses of general studies
Rs 7,800 per month – for students in technical programs, professional studies, medical and paramedical programs
The scholarships will be disbursed directly to the beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system annual on the renewal and continuation of support will be subject to satisfactory academic performance and attendance.

Applications are only accepted once a year via the official National Scholarship Portal. Students are encouraged to apply as early as possible and make sure all required documents are uploaded correctly.

1. Go to the National Scholarship Portal: https://scholarships.gov.in
2. Then click on “New Registration” (if you are not already a registered user).
3. Read through, and agree to the guidelines.
4. Log in using your credentials.
5. Select the “UGC Ishan Uday Scholarship” scheme from the available list of schemes.
6. Fill out all personal, academic & bank details required.
7. Carefully upload scanned copies of the required documents:
• Domicile Certificate
• Income Certificate
• Admission Proof
• Class 12 Marksheet
8. Submit your application and download a copy to your computer.
