Karnataka government’s schools and government-aided schools will be closed from October 8 to October 18. The break was announced today by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
The holiday has been declared in order to facilitate teachers engaging in the ongoing ‘Caste Survey’ and carrying out their duties. The survey was expected to be completed by October 7, but was extended because the survey was unevenly completed in different districts.
After a meeting with ministers and officials, Siddaramaiah told reporters, “We were supposed to complete the survey by October 7. But in some districts, the survey has almost been completed, while in others, the survey was lagging.” The extension is meant to ensure effective data completion in all areas.
Additionally, Siddaramaiah said that Koppal district was reported at 97%, while Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts were at 63% and 60%, respectively.
“Statewide, the survey has not been completed as expected,” he said. The government expects the survey to reach 100% completion within the next 10 days.
So far, three employees have died on duty carried out during the survey. The Karnataka government has declared an ex gratia of Rs 20 lakh each for the family members of employees who have died in the line of duty during the survey.
Teachers at present engaged in mid-term examinations will be excluded from survey associated duties.
As part of the survey all households in the state will be geo-tagged through its electricity meter number and assigned a Unique Household Identification (UHID). This will build a full digital database of every household.
In the data collection, ration card and Aadhaar details will be linked with residents’ mobile phone numbers. Rationing all households where no individual is at home during the survey, a helpline has been instituted at 8050770004. Officials also stated that citizens can “capture” online or make complaints through the same system.
