Bareilly: A woman, who was brutally beaten for not lending a cigarette on credit, died on Friday during treatment at a hospital in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh.
The woman was brutally assaulted by some people after she refused to give a cigarette on credit in Mirganj area in Bareilly, which led to her death on Friday, news agency UNI reported citing police sources.
Superintendent of Police (Rural) Raj Kumar Agarwal said Ram Murti Devi (50) ran a grocery shop in Lalitpur village.
On Thursday night, her neighbour and relative Vinod asked for a cigarette on credit, to which she refused.
Agitated, Vinod and a friend attacked her with a stick and rod, injuring her seriously.
The family members admitted the woman to the district hospital, where she died during treatment.
She succumbed to her injuries on Friday, the report said.
Other reports suggest that her son was also thrashed badly by the accused.
Police have registered a case at Mirganj police station and the search for the accused in the case is on.
