Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi continues to remain in ‘very poor’ category. Delhi government has already launched GRAP I and GRAP II plan to combat the rising air pollution level in the national capital. Water pollution has also increased and toxic foam can be seen floating on river Yamuna. Along with that, layer of smog has begun to engulf the city. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai assured that he is actively monitoring the situation of air pollution in Delhi and is taking effective measures to curb the surge.
Gopal Rai’s Reaction On GRAP II Measure
Speaking to ANI on air pollution and GRAP II measure in Delhi, Gopal Rai said that there is possibility of an increased impact on Delhi due to stubble burning in Haryana, Punjab and neighbouring areas. Reportedly, Delhi faces maximum impact due to stubble burning incidents in adjoining areas. The minister said, “With wind blowing in the northwest direction, there is a possibility of an increased impact on Delhi of stubble burning incidents in Haryana, Punjab and neighbouring areas.”
Rai mentioned that they have asked all the concerned departments to remain alert and monitor the situation. “We have asked all concerned departments to be on alert mode as the impact of smoke from stubble burning could increase. If the weather remains unfavourable, then pollution levels can rise,” added Rai.
He further told about his intention to write a letter to Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav to schedule a meeting regarding air pollution. “Today again, I will write to the Union Environment Minister to call a meeting on air pollution,” said Rai.
He informed that they have written to Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan Transport Ministers to not send diesel vehicles to Delhi till the time weather is unfavourable and pollution level is rising. He expects that these BJP governed states will cooperate with Delhi instead of politicizing it and alleviate the deteriorating situation. He also appealed to people to brace themselves for upcoming situation.
