A woman who went to a police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh for passport verification was on Friday mistakenly shot in her head with a pistol belonging to a Sub-Inspector (SI). The entire incident was caught on CCTV footage.

The incident took place at 2:50 pm, said Aligarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kalanidhi Naithani.

In the CCTV camera, it can be seen that the woman, Ishrat, entered the police station with her son and stood there for a while. After some time, a police official came and handed a pistol to SI Manoj Sharma. While the SI was cleaning the pistol, a bullet was accidentally fired at the woman, causing her to fall to the ground.

The injured woman was immediately taken to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, where she is said to be in critical condition, police said.

Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Principal Dr Manzoor Harris Khan said, “The bullet is still lodged in her head. A decision to operate upon her is still being reviewed.”

SSP Naithani said the bullet hit Ishrat’s back side of the head and the SI was suspended with immediate effect. A police field unit was investigating the CCTV footage.

“Strict action will be taken against the SI for his negligence. A criminal case has been registered against him. The woman is being treated. We have deployed a team to nab the police inspector as he is currently absconding,” said Naithani.
