Rohith Vemula’s mother joins Bharat Jodo Yatra, meets Rahul Gandhi
New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday met the mother of Rohith Vemula who had died by suicide in 2016 due to alleged discrimination against Dalit community.
Gandhi said: "Rohith Vemula is, and will remain a symbol of my struggle against social discrimination and injustice. By meeting Rohit's mother, the steps towards the goal of the journey got new courage, and new strength to the mind."
Who Was Rohith Vemula and How he died?
The 26-year-old PHD student Vemula was studying at the Hyderabad Central University (HCU) until he was suspended after a complaint filed against him by a local unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) (Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) student unit).
Vemula also lost his fellowship of Rs 25,000 for raising “issues under the banner of the Ambedkar Students Association” (ASA). After which, the PHD scholar along with four others was thrown out of the hostel room for failing to pay the rent.
Having no place to stay, Rohith along with his friends had set up tents in the camps and staged protests. However, he was brutally ignored by the administration.
After which, Rohith died by suicide with a flag of ASA terming his birth a "fatal accident" in a letter found on him.
Bharat Jodo Yatra Itinerary
On the first day of November, Bharat Jodo Yatra continues its march with from Matha Temple, Shamshabad. On Tuesday, Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi started Padyatra from Matha Temple in Shamshabad early in the morning.
Padyatra will reach Legacy Place followed by his stay at Hussaini Alam Junction Charminar in Hyderabad.
At 4:40, Gandhi will hoist national flag at Charminar. Then the yatra will continue and halt at Indira Gandhi Statue Necklace road. And lastly at Gandhi Ideology Centre in Secunderabad.
