In a deeply concerning incident that took place on Tuesday evening, a Monorail train came to a halt between Bhakti Park and Chembur, near Mysore Colony station in Mumbai, after experiencing a power supply failure. Videos circulating on social media showed several passengers stranded mid-route. They are currently being rescued from the stalled train.
The fire brigade, BMC and other agencies are swiftly carrying out a rescue operation using cranes. No injuries have been reported so far. The train, which runs on an elevated track, was stranded for at least one hour, officials said.
According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), preliminary checks revealed that the incident occurred due to overcrowding. The total weight of the train went up to 109 metric tonnes, exceeding its designed capacity of 104 metric tonnes. This excess weight led to a break in the mechanical contact between the power rail and the current collector, cutting off the power supply required to operate the train.

As per the latest update, the rescued passengers are being taken to the hospital in ambulances. A passenger rescued from the Monorail told ANI, “Passengers were patient. The train had many senior citizens and kids, and they were facing difficulties. Suffocation was the main problem inside the train.”
Another passenger, Sunil, said, “I was on the train from 5:30 PM. The rescue operation started after 1 hour. There were at least 500 passengers in the train. This train arrived after a gap of 30 minutes, so the entire train was overloaded with passengers.”

Mumbai has been experiencing heavy downpours and severe waterlogging for the past two days. Amid this, the Central Railway on Tuesday announced the cancellation of 14 long-distance trains (7 pairs). The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers, as waterlogging on tracks and low visibility have made operations unsafe.
