New Delhi: In a shocking turn of events, the prime suspect, Vikram Atwal, arrested in connection with the murder of a 23-year-old air hostess in Mumbai, was found dead allegedly by suicide in the Andheri police station lockup. The accused had allegedly slit the victim’s throat inside her Marol area.
The body of the accused has been sent for a post-mortem examination, as confirmed by the Mumbai Police.
The 24-year-old trainee flight attendant, who was the victim in this case, was discovered dead in her Andheri East apartment on Monday morning. Subsequently, the Powai police arrested Vikram Atwal, who worked as a member of the cleaning staff in the housing society, on suspicion of murder.
The victim had relocated to Mumbai from Raipur, Chhattisgarh, six months prior and had been residing in a rented apartment on the third floor of NG Complex, along with her elder sister and a friend. However, at the time of the incident, she was alone in the apartment, as her sister and friend had departed for their hometown three days earlier.
The victim last communicated with her family on Sunday morning, but as the day progressed, their attempts to contact her went unanswered. Concerned, the family reached out to her friends in the city, requesting them to check on her.
When these friends arrived at her residence around 9:30 PM, they found the door locked from the inside. Despite repeated knocking and ringing the doorbell, there was no response. They subsequently enlisted the assistance of a security guard to gain entry, leading to the tragic discovery of the victim’s lifeless body.
After the murder, Atwal had moved the victim’s body to the bathroom to conceal the crime and delay its discovery. The case, which had initially led to Atwal’s arrest, took a grim turn with his suicide in police custody.
