Maharashtra: Due to water released from the Irai Dam in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district on Saturday, the residential area of Pathanpura was inundated, halting the day to day activities.

The dam, located near Chandrapur and Tadoba Andhari Tiger Project, had to release excess water due to the torrential downpours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall and occasional gusty winds in Mumbai on Friday.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official also warned of the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.

The situation in Mumbai remained critical as Modak Sagar Lake, one of the seven lakes supplying water to the city, began overflowing at night.

The BMC kept a close eye on the situation to manage any potential flooding and water-related issues.

The region experienced significant rainfall in the past 24 hours, with places like Vasai, Jawhar, and Vikramgad receiving substantial rainfall. The total recorded rainfall for the period was 1480.9 mm, and the average rainfall recorded was 185.1 mm.

Due to the severity of the weather conditions, authorities took preventive measures. Schools and colleges in Raigad district were declared closed until Thursday to ensure the safety of students and residents amid the “red alert” issued by the weather department.

Additionally, the weather department issued an orange alert for six districts of Maharashtra until July 27, signaling the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Unfortunately, the state has faced the consequences of the heavy rains before. Recently, a tragic incident occurred in a tribal village located on a hill slope in Khalapur tehsil, Raigad district.
