Mumbai: Maharashtra is gearing up to witness advanced developments in its infrastructure and transport network. In a major announcement, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said that the elevated corridor project connecting Mumbai Trans Harbour Sealink (MTHL) and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will be completed by February 2027.
About The Elevated Corridor Project
The Rs 1,100-crore elevated corridor project is set to enhance connectivity in the city. It consists of two elevated corridors; one from the Chirle end of MTHL to Gavan Phata and another from Palaspe Phata to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The Chirle section will be 4,958 metres long while the Palaspe section will be 1,700 km long.
The project aims to ease traffic congestion on National Highway 348. This stretch witnesses heavy container traffic from Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT).
The reports stated that the elevated corridor will be constructed over the JNPT–Panvel National Highway. This will include reconstruction of service roads. Also, another six-lane will be built in Raigad district along the Old Mumbai-Pune National Highway (NH-48). NH-48 will be widened to six lanes.
The development of this project will boost regional connectivity and provide seamless travel experience. It will further enhance connectivity between two important cities; Mumbai and Pune.
Pune Pulse quoted officials who stated, “This project will change how people and businesses move between Mumbai and Pune. Professionals will be able to work in Mumbai while residing in Pune, improving opportunities and quality of life.”
Notably, the corridors will connect Atal Setu with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. This move will reduce traffic at key junctions and ease travel of commuters.
The latest update on the elevated corridor project indicates that the excavation work has started on the site.
