Mumbai: Mumbai traffic police launched the ‘No Honking’ campaign on Wednesday for 24 hours, and during the campaign, traffic police recovered a total of 2,116 challans.
Traffic police said, “The drive was a success and noise went down at several important junctions.”
Anti-noise activist Sumaira Abdulali said, “To be effective in reducing noise levels, the no-honking drive should be continuously held over a long time and the police should also partner with other government agencies such as MPCB and BMC.”
To assess the success of the drive, police employed a decibel metre to measure sound before and after the drive. Schoolchildren accompanied traffic cops with placards and banners to raise awareness about the programme.
She added, “As the police’s role is primarily one of enforcement, NGOs, ALMS, and educational institutions should also be on board for creating maximum awareness among drivers about the health hazards of honking.”
According to the feedback from motorists, traffic officers plan to hold a ‘No Honking Day’ once or twice a month. During the period when previous police commissioner Sanjay Pandey ordered a rigorous crackdown in April and May of 2022, traffic cops issued 35,300 challans for unnecessary honking.
