Mumbai: A lifeguard was arrested by Mumbai police for killing an MBBS student, Swadichha Sane, at Bandstand in Bandra in 2021. He was arrested for kidnapping her, but later he confessed to killing her.
The accused was identified as Mithu Singh, who killed MBBS student Swadichha Sane. The Mumbai Crime Branch submitted a 1,700-page chargesheet in the murder case of Sane. Sane was a third-year medical student at JJ College and a resident of Palghar. She was last seen with Singh on November 29, 2021, at the bandstand in Bandra.
The charge sheet includes testimony from 100 witnesses, four of whom have been recorded in front of magistrates. During the inquiry, the Crime Branch apprehended lifeguard Mithu Singh and his accomplice, Abdul Ansari. While Singh was initially detained for kidnapping, he eventually admitted to killing Sane.
Accused confession
Mithu Singh told investigators that during his talk with Sane on that fatal day, he made sexual overtures and attempted to get physical, but she rejected his advances.
Mithu Singh was enraged by this and shoved her, forcing her to strike her head on a stone and incur a head injury.

Witness statements
The charge sheet also includes testimony from the cook at Mithu Singh’s food stall and a delivery guy, who stated that three to four days after Sane went missing, they observed a body washed ashore at the Bandstand.
Meanwhile, security personnel at the C Rock Hotel reported seeing Sane leave with someone and return alone while stationed near the Bandstand.
One of the guards turned back and looked around with his torch. Later that year, in December, a woman’s body was discovered in the water near Trombay, and police obtained DNA samples and sent them to the forensic lab at Kalina, but the result is still pending.
The charge sheet also stated that the accused purposefully gave her multiple missed calls after putting her phone in flight mode.
According to the charge sheet, Sane’s body was discovered in the sea, and the investigation eventually led to Singh’s confession.
The matter will now go to trial. More information is being sought.
