Mumbai: The Maharashtra government renamed Mumbai's Versova-Bandra Sea Link as Veer Savarkar Setu and Mumbai Trans Harbour Link as Atal Bihari Vajpayee Smriti Nhava Sheva Atal Setu on the occasion of VD Savarkar's birth anniversary on May 28. He informed me that just like the gallantry awards of the central government, the state government will also give the Swatantryaveer Savarkar Gallantry Award'.

Who was Veer Savarkar Setu?

Veer Savarkar (Vinayak Damodar Savarkar) was a Hindu nationalist leader and revolutionary. In 1910, he was arrested by the British Government. In 1911, Veer Savarkar was sentenced to 50 years imprisonment. He was imprisoned in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Cellular Jail (Kala Pani) for 13 years. He wrote a book named 'Essentials of Hindutva' in 1921. The Bandra-Versova sea link will be 17 kilometres long and has been constructed to avoid Mumbai's jam. The work on the sea link has been going on since 2018, which will reduce the travel time from one and a half hours to half an hour. Bandra-Versova sea link is the second sea link to Mumbai. Starting from Versova, it will reach Bandra via Carter Road, Juhu, where it will connect with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Bandra-Versova sea link will have 8 lanes. According to the report, 11 thousand 332 crore rupees will be spent on the construction of this project. It was supposed to be completed in 2023, but due to delays, the project is now expected to be completed by 2026.
